In addition to the RDRNL20231215006 profile a Dutch medtech start-up is looking for additional partners for a Eurostars application to improve a new food-based (hydrogel) gastric balloon. The additional partners should be active in (fiber) laser technology, preferably for natural or synthetic polymers and/or simulation of peristalsis of the gastrointestinal system. Proposal submission for the 6th call of the Eurostars-3 program, deadline is 14 March 2024. A research cooperation is foreen.
A Dutch medtech start-up is specialized in de development of innovative biomedical solutions for treatment of obesity and recently developed a food-based, self-inflating and digestible gastric balloon, which you take as a pill under guidance of a professional. Obesity is one of the greatest public health challenges of the 21st century. Gastric bypass and other gastric surgeries, which are the most successful treatment options, shrink stomach volume with surgical modification. In a similar manner gastric space filling with gastric balloons shrinks stomach volume. It is anticipated that further clinical studies will demonstrate that the balloon after expanding in the acid environment of the stomach provides benefits similar to the results seen with bariatric surgery or existing gastric balloons, but without the need for trained surgeons and other advanced medical knowledge and facilities. For a Eurostars proposal and in addition to the previous request (RDRNL20231215006) the company is looking for R&D-partners: - Partners who can help to work with (fiber) laser technology in the manufacturing process. Experience with production lines for medical devices and GMP processes are a pre. - Furthermore, partners with knowledge of and/or an interest in (dynamic) simulation of peristalsis of the gastrointestinal system (in vitro (preferred) or mathematical), working on an application that is not competitive with the gastric balloon. The company is planning to submit a proposal for the 6th Eurostars call, deadline is 14 March 2024. A research cooperation is foreseen. Advantages and innovation The therapy is a simple concept that will provide the benefit of a pharmaceutical dosage form (a “pill”) to treat individuals who suffer from overweight and obesity. In the “pill” a small balloon is folded which will expand in the acid environment of the stomach and will remain there for 1-2 weeks after which it will disintegrate and be digested in the intestines. The scalability extends to both the ingestion of the device and to the safe biological elimination of the expired device and is continuously renewable with additional “pills”. One or multiple balloons will be resident at any one time and the number of balloons can be adjusted to provide the most efficacious space filling for each patient. The device is constructed of food and food grade materials. Technical Specification or Expertise Sought The additional partners (companies ) should be active in (fiber) laser technology, preferably for natural or synthetic polymers and/or (dynamic) simulation of peristalsis of the gastrointestinal system (in vitro (preferred) or mathematical).
