The National Center for Research on Human Evolution (CENIEH) is a leading center for research on human evolution with strong focus on Hominid Paleobiology, Paleolithic Archaeology, and Quaternary Sciences. The center is home to world-class scientists, state-of-the-art laboratories, and renowned fieldwork projects. The Archaeology Program at CENIEH offers access to pertinent archaeological sites, fostering groundbreaking research into early human behavior, culture, and technology.
Research Focus Areas
CENIEH seeks a motivated candidate to apply to the Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral fellowship of the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovacion y Universidades (Spain) to undertake research at CENIEH. The successful Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral fellow will join our research team and contribute to innovative projects in Paleolithic Archaeology. Our research program is at the forefront of investigating early hominid behavior and cognition, the evolution of stone tool technologies, and the interactions between prehistoric humans and their environments.
The Postdoctoral fellow will have the opportunity to work on a variety of archaeological topics, including:
1) Investigating stone tool production, use, and innovation across time and space;
2) Studying technological changes through time, particularly by investigating the major technological transitions in the Pleistocene for understanding hominid behavior and cognition;
3) studying raw material selectivity and implications on hominid behavioral evolution; and
4) Exploring early hominid cognitive development and social structures through material cultures.
The postdoctoral fellow in Paleolithic archaeology at CENIEH will benefit from:
1)    Access to fully equipped Prehistoric Lithic Technology and Experimental Archaeology and Taphonomy labs.
2)    Join our internationally recognized fieldwork projects in key Paleolithic sites in Africa (e.g., Gona [Ethiopia], Ain Hanech and Tighennif [Algeria] and others.
3)    Engage in interdisciplinary research with geologists, geochronologists, paleontologists, and paleoanthropologists to develop holistic interpretations of ancient human life.
4)    Work closely with leading experts in the field of Paleolithic Archaeology who will support the postdoctoral fellow’s research and publication goals.
