Postdoctoral researcher. Advanced Computational Physics group of the Physics department of the University of the Balearic Islands

Más información

The Advanced Computational Physics group of the Physics department of the University of the Balearic Islands is seeking for a postdoctoral researcher to work in the project «Multiscale numerical study of the endothelial glycocalyx behaviour in the microvascular network and its role in the formation of obstructive deposits» funded by the Spanish Ministry in its Excellence call.

ABOUT THE GROUP:

Members of the group conduct research in the fields of both of computational biomechanics, with a focus on fluid-structure interaction and multiscale simulations, and of polymer and colloidal systems. They are also members of the IAC3, Institute of Applied Computing and Community Code, where they participate in a research line that develops software for automatic code generation of dynamical multiphysics simulation models in parallel frameworks for exascale computing. Collaborators not only include experts in computing but also in magnetohydrodynamics.

ABOUT THE POSTDOC POSITION:

The goal of this postdoc project is to develop and test a high performance multiscale numerical method able to perform an accurate description of the blood flow in microvessels which takes into account the effects induced by the glycocalyx and use the novel method to study the rheology and tribology in microvessels, as well as the role of the glycocalyx in the onset to the formation of deposits in the microvascular network. For this purpose, we will couple a continuum-based CFD code currently used for fluid-structure interaction simulations with a particle-based code currently used for polymer and colloid simulations. The simulations performed in the project will be tested against experiments.

The candidate will be supervised by Dr Joan Josep Cerdà Pino and Dr. Carles Bona-Casas and he/she will work in cooperation with other members of the project and of the IAC3. The candidate is expected to publish the results of his/her research in top-tier conferences and journals of computational mechanics, soft matter and/or multidisciplinary sciences.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE CANDIDATES:

Candidates are expected to hold a PhD in any discipline with a strong mathematical and computer science background. He/she should have experience in numerical simulation and programming with CFD codes and/or particle-based codes for soft matter. Extraordinary candidates without a PhD but in posession or about to obtain a Masters degree will also be considered. Salary will be decided according to merits of the candidate.

Applicants should submit a CV, statement of research interests (up to 2 pages) as well as names and email addresses of 2-3 references to jj.cerda@uib.cat and carles.bona@uib.es

Applications arriving before March 15, 2018 will receive full considerations, but the search will continue until the position is filled.
