Fully funded 3-4-year Ph.D. contract in the frame of the European project “CHARISMA: Characterization of materials by harmonized Raman measurements” supervised by Miguel A. Bañares and Raquel Portela at the Instituto de Catálisis y Petroleoquímica (ICP) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) in close collaboration with the industrial partner Haldor Topsøe. The research activities will be developed at the Spectroscopy and Industrial Catalysis facilities in Madrid with stays of several months in Denmark at Haldor Topsøe’s R&D department Atomic Scale Analysis.


The aim of CHARISMA is to harmonise characterisation by Raman spectroscopy, including hardware, measurement protocols, and in silico methods, enabling end-users to share digital spectral data across domains and across the entire life cycle of diverse products. The target is to create a virtual centre of excellence on characterisation of materials with Raman spectroscopy for the advantage of the European industry and academia. The feasibility of the concept will be demonstrated in three industry cases. In the long term, the aim is to make Raman spectroscopy a widespread technology used within the Industry Commons concept.


Raman spectroscopy harmonisation by CHARISMA will facilitate the use of web-based FAIR (Findable Accesible Interoperable and Reusable) databases and executable applications, allowing widespread implementation of Raman characterisation of nanomaterials in the industry and, in general, an open and more efficient use of this technique, enabling comparison and linking experimental data. Specifically, the early stage researcher will be involved in the implementation of real-time in situ Raman spectroscopy for quality control in the industrial production of catalysts at Haldor Topsøe and for the development and evaluation of improved sustainability strategies.


 


The Ph.D. candidate will work in an exciting international environment and participate in a small but expanding team strategically located in the capital of Spain.


We are searching for an outstanding candidate with a strong academic background (score higher that 75%), preferably with research experience from the B.Sc. and M.Sc. studies in chemistry, physics, engineering or materials science. The candidate exhibits independent thinking, and possesses good technical writing ability and verbal communication skills in English. A background in spectroscopy (preferably Raman), chemometrics, theoretical calculations, materials science, or process control will be a value. The position is open for candidates that can apply for CSIC’s job bank as predoctoral candidate and for a doctorate in a Spanish University (UAM is in our campus) in a reasonable time.
