Experimental and computational design of metallic alloys for multi-materials additive manufacturing using direct energy deposition (DED) technology.

IMDEA Materials Institute is looking for a candidate for a PhD position in "Physical and computational simulation of novel metallic alloys for additive manufacturing".

The project is focused on the development of new metallic materials for additive manufacturing (3D printing) using Direct Energy Deposition (DED) technology. DED allows depositing different materials during the same build process, and thus permit fabricating compositionally-graded materials, i.e. with different compositions and hence different properties in different regions of the part. The objective of this work will be to identify and study the compatibility of different materials (e.g. different steel grades, with or without particle reinforcements) to be printed together. The main activities will revolve around characterization of different feedstock powders, lab-scale (Gleeble) experiments to physically simulate the DED processing of different materials, and computational thermodynamics calculations (CalPhaD) to explore different potential materials candidates (e.g. potential phases, kinetics of species diffusion, transformation temperatures, etc.).

The doctoral work is one part of a nationally-funded larger collaborative project, lead by a world-leading industrial corporation in the field of metallurgy and manufacturing, and coordinated by another research center in Spain. In that sense, the objective of the PhD will be directed toward actual implementation of a new technology, and close interaction with other partners (academic and industrial) are expected, and thus the ability to work in a team is essential.

The Ph.D. candidate will acquire hands-on experience with state-of-the-art processing and characterization of materials (e.g. electron microscopy, powder rheology, physical simulation, sample preparation and testing), as well as in computational methods for thermodynamics of complex metallic alloys (e.g. using the CalPhaD method). The student will gain expertise in several fields of high employability (e.g. additive manufacturing, advanced manufacturing and characterization, materials modeling) and experience in both fundamental and applied research in materials and metallurgy, opening perspectives in both academia and industry.

The candidate should have a degree (MSc or equivalent) in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline, with excellent academic credentials. Candidates with prior knowledge or experience in processing and characterization of metallic materials are strongly encouraged to apply.

Full proficiency in English, oral and written, is mandatory. Knowledge of Spanish is not required (complimentary classes offered weekly at IMDEA Materials).
