Banco Sabadell otorga este premio con objeto de reconocer la excelencia de personas jóvenes, con una importante trayectoria en el campo de la búsqueda biomédica y ciencias de la salud, que destaquen en su especialidad por su capacidad de innovación. El premio consiste en una dotación de 50.000 euros y una obra de un escultor español contemporáneo. La de esta edición es del barcelonés Sergi Aguilar, considerado uno de los principales artistas españoles de su generación.

La dotación del premio es de 50.000 euros. Los candidatos deberán cumplir los siguientes requisitos: investigadores de hasta 42 años cumplidos en el 2011, españoles o que lleven un mínimo de tres años haciendo un trabajo de investigación en España, y que hayan centrado sus trabajos en el campo de la Biomedicina y las Ciencias de la Salud. The offered position will be in the context of the SANITAS individual Project 1.C. “Biodegradation of micropollutants”. Despite the uncertainties on the effects of micropollutants into the environment (i.e. pharmaceuticals) and the lack of knowledge regarding their degradation, increasingly stringent discharge limits are expected. Biodegradation in a WWTP is the only real micropollutant elimination step and, therefore needs to be optimized. However, knowledge of biodegradation mechanisms and operational parameters influencing biodegradation are lacking. The research objective is to investigate biodegradation mechanisms of target micropollutants by different approaches. The applicant should have an excellent academic track record and be interested in interdisciplinary research in the topics of wastewater treatment, microbiology and chemistry. Candidates will be considered from biotechnology, chemistry, environmental sciences and engineering backgrounds. The applicant should possess good oral and written communication skills in English. The candidate must have proven laboratory skills and experience. Previous experience on molecular microbiology, analytical chemistry (preferably pharmaceutical compounds) and activated sludge will be valued. Candidates can be of any nationality and must comply with the rule for mobility: at the time of recruitment, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the reference date.

PhD position available in the framework of the Career Integration Grant 2011 titled: Development of New Non-Empirical DFT Functionals The work will be held at the Institute of Computational Chemistry of the University of Girona (Girona, Spain), under the supervision of Dr. Matito and Prof. Miquel Solà. RESEARCH: Statistical Genetics. The genetic basis of complex diseases. Development of innovative statistical methods (and the corresponding computational implementation) for handling high-dimensional genetic data. The main motivation of this project is the understanding of the effect of the genetic and environmental component in the susceptibility and the curse of complex diseases. Complex diseases are controlled by molecular mechanisms characterized by the joint action of several genes, with a small individual effect, that interact with environmental factors. The analysis of genetic information poses important methodological challenges that determine the goal of this project: i) study of genetic interactions and complex genetic patterns; ii) the dimensionality problem appearing in the context of more variables than individuals. REQUIREMENTS: We require a very motivated person in possession of an official Master degree in Statistics or Bioinformatics.
